Child Passenger Safety

Seat Belt Tips for Child Passenger Safety

All children age 12 and under should be buckled up in the rear seat of the vehicle.

  • Children should ride in an appropriate child safety seat until 8 years of age, unless they are 4 feet 9 inches tall and weigh 80 pounds.
  • Holding a child in your lap provides no additional safety. An unrestrained 10-pound infant would instantly be ripped from an adult’s arms in a 30-mph collision.
  • Don’t place a single seat belt over yourself and a child. In a front-end collision, the child could be crushed by your body.
  • A seat belt must be adjusted to the size of a child. As with adults, the lap belt should cross the child’s upper thighs and the diagonal belt should cross the upper chest and a point between the neck and the center of the shoulder.
  • Children should continue to use a belt-positioning booster until the lap and shoulder belts fit properly and the child’s legs are long enough to bend at the edge of the seat.
Child Safety Seat Tips

Safety requirements change as children grow. Learn the basic facts for proper use of child safety seats.

  • Infants — From birth to 1 year and less than 20 pounds, infants should be placed in rear-facing child safety seats in the back seat of the car. The harness straps should be at or below shoulder level.
  • Toddlers — From 1 year and at least 20 to 40 pounds, toddlers should be placed in forward-facing child safety seats in the back seat of the car. The harness straps should be at or above the shoulders. Children who are less than 1 year but weigh more than 20 pounds should ride in restraint seats approved for higher rear-facing weights.
  • Young children — Children more than 40 pounds but less than 4 feet 9 inches tall should be placed in forward-facing booster seats in the back seat of the car. Lap belts should fit low and tight across the thighs, and shoulder belts should fit snugly across the chest and shoulder to prevent abdominal injuries.

It is important to know that your child passenger safety devices are working properly at all times. For up-to-date notifications of the latest recalls on child safety devices, you can subscribe to RSS feeds and email notifications offered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Why I Fear for my Country

Fear

Written by Jack Rabbit

For the first time I’m scared. I mean really scared. For the first time in my lifetime it looks like America may actually be coming to an end.

As I traveled over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays I payed special attention to the public. At gas stations and shopping centers – I took the time to observe. We are doomed. These people have nothing, know nothing, and are not interested. Talk about rabble.

As I spoke to members of my family at holiday celebrations – about topics foreign to me – like what’s going on with their favorite TV show… my heart sank. No hope.

As I browsed the web to see the most recent joke of a terrorist attack – just enough not to cause property damage but just enough to scare the cringing American soccer-moms – I just stared. The conversation in the background continued – I didn’t participate.

Why won’t my family listen to the truth?

America is presently doomed. I’ve not even had the energy to do much blogging – since the words seem to fall on a mass of sheep intent on filling their stomachs. These are not citizens – they are consumers – oblivious to the death and destruction spread in their names.

The American citizen has become a penniless tool of credit card companies – unable to perform their duty as citizen since they cannot collect enough brain energy to grasp the mind-fuck under which they live. They live for a few moments between jobs – or rides to their children’s activities, while monsters blow their still-uncollected tax money on expensive robot-drones used to kill “terrorists” – whatever they are. Ask an American what a terrorist is – you might as well ask a cinderblock.

We need a plan, leadership, and decisive action to save America. Our leaders have failed us. Many are being blackmailed. Unless those of us with the answers are taken seriously in public and supported this country is gone.

But maybe I’m wrong – that there really are Americans out there. That there are people who understand that anyone pretending that they have the power to take away their rights is a traitor and an enemy.

Will there be a country for our grandchildren to inherit?

In the coming year it will be of the utmost importance to educate, invigorate and galvanize all. The American public is up against an organized force of thieves, liars and power-hungry oligarchs with the means, motive and opportunity to take everything. But what does it matter?

Our Bill of Rights is the only thing we have right now. There is absolutely no respect given to the Constitution of the United States – Why? Why when we have a so-called constitutional scholar in the White House? Perhaps the best way to undermine the Constitution is with someone who understands it best. And I’ve concluded from my holiday observations that no one is looking out for the American citizen regarding the Constitution of the United States.

Especially not the American citizen. No – they cling to their belief that “somebody cares” – or maybe they are so ignorant of the theft of the only thing they have that matters – unique in time – and unique in world history – their Bill of Rights and Constitution – …

I am concerned that the media is useless providing zero feedback to the population so elections can work. I am concerned that our elections are stolen – by companies who can give a paper receipt for a bank transaction at an ATM but not at the election booth. I am concerned that we have mercenary armies raping and pillaging half the planet with our money but not representing our ideals. I am concerned that our elected representatives, blackmailed, are using mercenaries to continue wars that have no support here in the United States. I am concerned that false-flag operations are constantly used, with the support of a phony news media – to stampede the American public into actions contrary to their freedoms. That’s treason by the way.

For the first time in my life I’ve heard stable even-tempered adults discussing violent revolution. How crazy is that? Is that what it is going to take?

Where is the FBI on 911 Truth? AWOL. Our insane alphabet-soup agencies, CIA, NSA and the rest of them are simply a bunch of robotic brainwashed idiots – running around the world sticking their noses in everyone else’s business – then when their nation-building antics backfire – we, the American public, are supposed to sit here and accept the police state required to maintain this madness. How about no?

How about no more prisons? How about no more cops running around with automatic rifles in this “land of the free and home of the brave?” How about some real change we can believe in?

President Obama "Who is he?"

Obama is a fraud, a liar, and as far as I am concerned a traitor. He is a one-world government con-artist with no respect for what America really stands for. He is a front-man for a group of con-artists – troops to Yemen, Columbia, Pakistan – continue the war in Afghanistan, Iraq, saber-rattling toward Iran. Is this clown for real? Why doesn’t he declare war on the North Pole? Or is that a coming attraction?

Here in Charlottesville, Virginia we’ve recently been buried under a blanket of snow too high to drive through with most Jeeps. The entire town crippled – couldn’t plow our own roads. What if Al Quaida attacked then? People were stuck in their cars overnight – no emergency crews could reach them. Yeah – we are really a superpower. Meanwhile our military is deployed the world over to save everything.

Obama through Executive Order Gave Interpol Free Rein in America.

2010 must be the year of the plan. We need leadership, ideas and action. We need to shit-can our members of the House of Representatives – the first place to look – who don’t know what a Bill of Rights is. We need to kick out anybody trampling on that Bill of Rights. Then we need to start working out from there.

Our dysfunctional House of Representatives is the starting line – the first place to focus all actions. And we need them to tackle the big issues – like 911 Truth and these phony wars. Anybody using the term “War on Terror” needs to be fired – period.

Betsey Ross created the first American Flag

I guess I’ve ranted enough – I just hope some of this sank in. We are in big, big trouble here in America – and if we don’t get organized and unite as Americans – we’ll be saluting a new flag very very soon.

Dentist run down

A Bay Ridge dentist was killed last week following a harrowing scene that put him in the path of two passing cars.

Officials said that 58-year-old Harry Lewner was paces away from his dental practice at 9 p.m. on December 17 when he crossed Fourth Avenue near 79th Street and was struck by a passing Kia.

The force of the impact sent him stumbling into a second vehicle, which also hit him, officials said.

The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene as the Kia sped off into the night.

About 90 minutes later the driver of the Kia, identified as 21-year-old Karrissa McFaline of Bristol, Connecticut surrendered to cops in the 7th Precinct in Manhattan. She claimed that she knew she hit something, but didn’t realize she had hit a person until someone had told her about the accident.

Cops charged McFaline with leaving the scene of an accident. No charges were filed against the second driver.

Butcher blast

A worker at a 15th Avenue butcher shop was shot as a heartless thief raided the business last week.

Police said that the woman, the wife of the owner, was putting money in the register at Romeo Brothers Meats and Foods near 78th Street at 4:30 p.m. December 18 when the unidentified suspect burst in and started blasting away.

The thug shot the woman and then rifled through the register, taking an undisclosed amount of cash as his victim writhed in pain on the floor.

A few minutes later the owner of the store returned, finding his wounded wife.

Police said that the woman was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center where she was listed in stable condition after treatment.

Cops are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward.

Calls can be made to the 62nd Precinct at (718) 236-2611. All calls will be kept confidential.

Burglar brawl

A would-be burglar wrestled with an 81st Street resident after he was caught breaking into the man’s home Thursday, police alleged.

Officials said that the resident returned to his home between Sixth Avenue and Gatling Place at 11:45 a.m. on December 17 when he found 40-year-old David Ortiz allegedly reaching into his abode through a shattered rear window.

Ortiz, who had a crowbar in one hand, was reaching into the window in an attempt to unlock the back door, officials alleged.

The victim surprised the middle-aged thief and chased him away, but Ortiz had a lot of fight left in him, police alleged.

After being chased down the block, Ortiz reportedly turned around and grappled with the victim.

Ortiz broke away after a few moments and ran off, but was soon in the hands of responding police officers who charged him with burglary in the second degree, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Dirty dating

A conniving couple was arrested last week after they were caught allegedly swiping a watch from the Century 21 on 86th Street.

Officials said that 24-year-old Sergey Smirnov and 25-year-old Ekaterina Timofeeva were perusing the aisles in the department store between Fourth and Fifth avenues at 8:18 p.m. December 15 when Smirnov allegedly picked up a watch.

He pulled the tag from the timepiece and promptly handed it over to his companion, who put the item into her purse – right in front of an employee, police alleged.

Workers grabbed the couple as they allegedly attempted to leave the store without paying for the watch.

Responding officers charged them with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

Tracked down

Cops didn’t need satellite navigation to track down a would-be thief nabbed for swiping a GPS device from a Toyota parked on Third Avenue.

Officials said that they were called shortly after 1 a.m. on December 9 after the owner of a 1992 Toyota Paseo returned to his parking spot near 72nd Street and saw Roberto Rios allegedly looming over the vehicle.

Realizing he was spotted, Rios dropped a metal rod and ran off, police alleged. The owner of the car soon discovered that his door had been scratched and dented. The portable GPS device he had left inside was missing.

Responding officers caught up with Rios a short time later, charging him with criminal possession of burglar’s tools, criminal mischief and petit larceny.

While the stolen GPS device wasn’t on Rios when he was collared, a gravity knife was, officials said.

My favorite cartoon character growing up was the sly Jerry from Tom & Jerry fame, but after seeing the in-action video, I somehow have doubts that even he could survive an encounter with the Better Mousetrap.

Look at that thing! It's got solenoid valves, controllers, indicators, circuit boards, and a pneumatic actuator. And while I don't know what half of those things do, I certainly know that they catch and slaughter lil' mousies.

Most people would concede that this Election has been one of the longest and most controversial presidential races in a generation. Our nation is poised to either elect the first black president or the first woman to the vice presidency. History will be made tomorrow after all the ballots have been counted. With massive new voter registration figures this year, both campaigns are at the ready with a tool on their site to answer the question: Where do I vote?

Barack Obama's Campaign Site: Where to vote tool

At www.barackobama.com, there's a handy where to vote tool on the right of the screen. You must enter your street address to be directed to your polling station. However, it is not necessary to give the site your name or email address for the where to vote tool to work. I can only assume that email addresses are being collected to remind voters to vote tomorrow, as it is not necessary information needed to determine where your polling place is located.

Typing in my address (sans email address) into the where to vote tool brought up a page which showed a map and a blue line to show the route to my polling place, along with a link to get directions if I needed them. In addition, the tool also displayed the names and addresses of 5 individuals in my neighborhood. I must confess, I was uncomfortable with this, as I feel that it violates privacy. The where to vote tool did not include a disclosure that your name and address would be shared with other users of the site. Still, if you recognized the name of a neighbor, you could help out the environment and share a ride to the polls.

Pros: Very easy to use, directions provided upon request

Cons: Privacy concerns. I really disliked the site displaying private citizens' names and addresses without permission.

John McCain's Campaign Site: Where to vote tool

John McCain's site, www.johnmccain.com, contains a tool to help supporters determine where to vote, based on their address. To be brutally honest, the McCain site lags behind Obama's in that the tool isn't handily available once the page loads. I spent a bit of time searching through the page for the where to vote tool and I had a difficult time locating it because it appeared only periodically versus being a fixed application that could be launched. In two tries, I had the where to vote tool appear in two different places: once as a bar across the top of the page and once on the left hand side when the page refreshed. If Mac wants voters to know where to go to vote, he should make this tool easier to find on his web page.

Like Barack Obama's where to vote tool, McCain's tool is very easy to use and only requires just your address to determine your polling information. You can avoid giving out your email and name and the tool will still work for you. However, the McCain where to vote tool displayed a map with the route highlighted and provided turn by turn directions displayed on the screen, along with an estimated time for the trip.

Pros: Turn by turn directions given without having to click on another link

Cons: Hard to locate the tool on the website, as it appears intermittently.

Seven-time Bathurst winner Jim Richards will return to his Ford roots when he attends the 19th Annual Kiwanis all Ford Day on February 21, 2010 as a special guest.

Jim Richards back with the Blue Oval for All Ford Day

Appropriately, Richards will bring his 550hp (410kW) racing Shannons 1964 Falcon Sprint to join the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Ford Falcon being held at the event. The Falcon Sprint will be one of 1,200 Fords show cars of all models expected at the 2010 All Ford Day, which will be staged at the Deakin University Sports Grounds at Waurn Ponds, Geelong.

Over 30 Ford car clubs will be displaying, along with individual show cars  – all vying for trophies.

Richards started racing a Ford 105E (slope-back) Anglia in his native New Zealand in the early 1960s before graduating to his famous ‘Sidchrome Mustang’, which he brought to Australia when he came here to live in the mid-1970s. He then raced a lightweight Falcon XC-based Sports Sedan in the early 1980s.

Away from the racetrack, Richards has owned a string of Ford road cars over the years, including a rally Escort RS 2000 and an XY Falcon GT.

After initially racing a Mustang in the Biante Touring Car Masters, he swapped to his current Shannons Falcon Sprint, finishing fourth outright in the 2009 Championship.

As well as Ford vehicle of all types, the 2010 Kiwanis All Ford Day will include a Shannons Memorabilia Auction, autograph signings by Ford V8 Supercar stars, trade stalls, V8 Supercar merchandise sales, a (Ford) Bathurst Driving Simulator, a Ford Discovery Centre Display, kid’s rides and a live band.

We’ve Got an App for That

When Ford Motor Company began researching ways to adapt Smartphone mobile apps for in-car use through voice control of its popular SYNC® communications system, the company first turned to the nearby University of Michigan-Dearborn campus to spur innovative ideas around “what’s next” for the connected car experience.

There, Ford enlisted the help of six computer science students, working with their professors to devise an extracurricular project that would net the young programmers invaluable real-world experience. It would also give Ford an education on the open software community, which was what the company wanted in order to take SYNC to the next level.
